Cereal Event 2007 – NIAB award goes to Fuego bean

Spring bean Fuego is this year’s winner of the NIAB Variety Cup.

Presenting the award to breeder Olaf Sass and Frank Curtis of UK marketer, NIAB’s Tina Barsby explained that the variety had contributed significantly to sustained crop productivity by offering better yield and quality, especially for import human consumption export markets, and improved returns for growers.

After five years it still outyielded the next best variety in trials by 6%, stood well and was fairly early.

It also had moderately good resistance to downy mildew which could be expensive to control, she noted.

“Once again NIAB awards show that plant breeders are constantly making progress to underpin UK agriculture.”
