David Hinchliffe was combining winter wheat until 12.30am last night (25 August), and was very pleased with yields so far.
The 100ha (250 acres) of Cordiale cut at Bank House Farm, Goole, Yorkshire, had yielded well over 10t/ha (4t/acre) as a second wheat, and up to 12t/ha (4.9t/acre) as a first wheat.
“Quality is holding up so far,” said Mr Hinchliffe. Cordiale cut last week tested at 360-380 Hagberg, but no results were available yet for wheat cut over the weekend.
“We had two inches of rain last week so it’s nice to be going again,” he said. Oilseed rape cut a while ago yielded a consistent 4tha (1.6t/acre), which was also very pleasing.
Mr Hinchliffe hoped to make a start on the Humber seed crop this afternoon and the Viscount seed crop tomorrow.
He would then return to the Cordiale and Brompton commercial crop, with 200ha (494 acres) left to cut.
“There’s a lot of wheat to cut in our part of Yorkshire – I don’t think many people will finish this week.”
On average, harvest was about 60% complete in the area, with a third of the winter wheat now cut, he said.
