Drought toll in Scotland

IN EAST Lothian, Alistair Aitken cut 20ha (50 acres) of Scylla winter barley for feed yesterday at Waughton Farm, East Linton. But lack of moisture on his heavy land for the past three weeks seems to have taken its toll.

“It’s still on the floor but it looks like it has yielded 3t/acre – which is about average. But it’s a thin sample,” he said.

Desiccated oilseed rape is still ten days away from cutting, he reported.
