Early-drilled first wheats disastrous says Durham farmer

Michael Manners said the weather in Staindrop, Durham, had been cracking for the past few days. “We should get finished next Tuesday, all being well.”

However, his wheat yields were disappointingly 1.2t/ha (0.5t/acre) down on the five-year average. “The Napier as a second wheat has done better than the first wheats, at 8.6-9.9t/ha (3.5-4t/acre),” he said. “The first wheats drilled early were disastrous.”

Yields averaged 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) across the 243ha (600 acres) of Napier, Alchemy, Gladiator, Robigus and Glasgow, at 72-78kg/hl.

“We’re cutting Alchemy at the moment, then Robigus and Napier after the potatoes. They don’t look bad crops but we won’t know until we’re in them.”
