But he is concerned that with the rape emerging in the space of 2 to 3 days in favourable conditions, it could cause problems with flea beetles.

He predicts 60% of oilseed rape has so far been drilled as “there was a sudden rush of orders this week”.

The drilling is a fortnight behind last year, but Mr Bouch said this should not cause any problems.

After a very difficult year to harvest wheat, nearly all farmers have now managed to get their grain into the store.

“They‘ve probably got slightly better yields but a shed full of poor quality wheat that will be very difficult to market, especially with our European cousins having a good harvest.”

Only the earliest cut wheats have been able to retain any quality after one of the wettest Augusts farmers have ever seen.

“Not an enormous amount kept their hagbergs, but this reflects the season where, due to the weather, that would have been the case.”

Mr Bouch thinks millers will lower their objectives in light of the lack of quality on the market.

He also said Gladiator and Einstein did very well in comparison to other varieties this year.

“Gladiator had a very good year and Einstein has proved its worth as a second wheat.”
