Fantastic harvest near Wallingford

Philip Chamberlain had a fantastic harvest at Crowmarsh Battle Farm, Wallingford, Oxfordshire, although the final crop was rather disappointing.

“We finished our beans on Tuesday (13 September) and they don’t look very pretty. It’s hardly a surprise, given the dry weather.”

The Pyramid beans ranged from just 1t/ha to 3.25t/ha (0.4-1.3t/acre).

But Prophet micronising peas were much better, at over 4t/ha (1.6t/acre). “And they are excellent quality too.”

Wheat yields were the best ever, despite a massive range depending on soil type.

“Panorama as a second wheat ranged from 5.6t/ha to 10.8t/ha (2.3-4.4t/acre) in neighbouring fields, sown and treated the same throughout.”

Einstein, on very thin soil, averaged 6.5t/ha (2.6t/acre), while Hereward on better soil did 8t/ha (3.2t/acre).

“Cordiale was the highest yielding, at 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre) – and all the milling wheat quality was good.”

Tipple spring barley proved as variable as the wheat, ranging from 6t/ha on chalk to 8t/ha on clay (2.4-3.2t/acre).

“We had 1100t, and over 90% of it was top grade malting quality,” said Mr Chamberlain. “On average, yields were probably the best ever.”

Oilseed rape yielded just above average, at 3.4-4t/ha (1.4-1.6t/acre). “The Excalibur was the best – all the others did 3.4t/ha.

“We had more oilseed rape than we’ve ever had, and had a considerable pigeon and rabbit problem.”
