Gerald proves to be a winner
Norfolk farmer Ed Lankfer has finished his oats, barley and oilseed rape, but like others is struggling with the wet weather and has only combined a quarter of his wheat crop so far.
Despite problems with lodging earlier in the season, Mr Lankfer said he was “chuffed to bits” with his Gerald oats, which yielded just over 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).
Bushel weights were around 50kg/hl, which suits the local horse feed market the crop is sold into.
With only ambient storage available, “fans have been on constantly” to preserve the quality of crops in store.
Despite the weather, he is “reasonably pleased” with the wheat harvested so far.
“We managed to get 85t off 9.5ha,” he said.
“Yields are similar to last year, although we are a bit disappointed with the barley.”
Mr Lankfer was also quite pleased with the performance of his oilseed rape, which despite some problems at drilling “yielded around 3.5t/ha”.
“Yields were quite high, despite late drilling due to the dry autumn last year.”
