Glorious Yorkshire weather helps wheat harvest progress

Yorkshire contractor Keith Snowball was busy combining Zebedee winter wheat for a customer today (September 7), and hoped to finish harvest by the start of next week.

“The weather has been glorious recently. We only have 12ha (30 acres) of spring barley to cut for a customer, and that should be ripe on Sunday,” he said.

His own Solstice milling wheat had averaged 8.9t/ha (3.6t/acre) – better than initially expected, and it all ought to make milling quality.

Some Cocktail spring barley cut two weeks ago made nearly 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) but in general yields had been very variable, although quality was generally reasonable, he said.

Some spring beans cut last Friday made just 2.5t/ha (1t/acre)
