GM-boat protest ends in arrests

GREENPEACE CAMPAIGNERS who boarded a cargo ship off the coast of Wales said to be carrying GM crops have been arrested.

The Independent reports that the 12 protesters were arrested by police who winched down onto the 125,000 tonne MV Etoile from a helicopter.

Greenpeace claims that the vessel‘s GM cargo is destined to be used as animal feed on the dairy farms which supply milk to Britain‘s biggest supermarkets.

The paper reports that police successfully detached two campaigners who had suspended themselves on ropes above the propeller.

The protesters are being held in custody for causing a public nuisance and will be questioned later on Tuesday (Jun 21).

Acting chief constable Brian Greaves told the newspaper the protests ended safely following negotiations between the owners of the ship and the campaigners.
