David Roberts from G O Davies of Westbury in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, said the forecast is good at the moment for harvest.
Winter barley is nearly finished in the area, yielding above average. He said Pearl was very disappointing with very high nitrogen levels in the early-harvested crop. Later crops should be ok and Optic and Cocktail spring barleys were good at 1.6% nitrogen, he says. Mr Roberts said Carat was looking very good with bushel weights up to 68kg/hl.
Oilseed rape harvest is also well underway in the area. Some loads of Astrid have yielded very well over the weighbridge at up to 5t/ha.
Wheat harvest also started today at a high 19% moisture. Gladiator on one farm was yielding 9t/ha which he said was not too bad for third wheats.
Mr Roberts added: “It would be nice for farmers if there weren’t too many drying costs.”
