Wheat harvest is going well at Hall Farm, Whetstead, Suffolk, where Andrew Maddever is cutting Oakley today (13 August).

“We’ve cut about 50ha of Oakley and it’s yielding between 8.75t/ha and 9.25t/ha. I’m not desperately disappointed with that, except that it looked like a 12t crop all year.”

Cut at 16-18% moisture, it had a bushel weight of 68-70kg/hl, he said.

Gallant had been very disappointing, yielding just 7-7.5t/ha. “It had a protein of 13.1-14%, but the Hagberg was 125-200 and the bushel weight was just 66-72kg/hl. It’s just shrivelled up and full of fusarium.”

Solstice, which Mr Maddever had just made a start on, looked just as bad, he said.

But Cordiale had done extremely well, yielding between 9t/ha and 9.4t/ha. “It had a protein content of 13-14%, Hagberg of 300 and bushel weight of 71-78kg/hl.

“I bought 60t of seed this morning, as I’m fairly confident it will be my variety for next year.”

Cassata winter barley yielded slightly better than average, at 8.2t/ha, and all made the malting grade, he added.

And a range of oilseed rape varieties across 467ha also came in about average at 3.7-3.8t/ha. “It’s down on last year, and oil contents are low, at 41-42%.”

Mr Maddever was pushing harvest as hard as possible, to get the oilseed rape sown in time. “We’re cutting everything about a day ahead of where it should be.

“Ground conditions are starting to get reasonable, but we’re forecast half an inch of rain on Wednesday, so it will probably get very wet very quickly.”
