Potato harvest progresses well
Q Potato harvest was over a third complete following a decent week of weather in most parts, the Potato Council reported on Monday 21 September.
Nearly 47,000ha (36%) had been lifted as of last Friday (18 September) compared with 26% at the same time in 2008.
However, parts of East Anglia remained very dry and an inch of irrigation was essential in some parts to reduce bruising. Wastage levels were increasing in both packing and processing crops, with some high dry matters of 25% being reported.
In Scotland, harvest conditions had improved, although heavy soils remained wet underneath the surface. Common scab appeared to be fairly general in the country, with growth defects also being reported.
