Grassweed emergence signals post-em spray preparation

Prepare for post-emergence spraying, growers are being warned, after grassweed emergence monitoring by Dow AgroSciences showed weeds had begun emerging at the majority of its five monitoring sites.

Emergence of blackgrass, sterile brome and Italian ryegrass could be expected to speed up as a result of significant rain in some areas onto warm soils, said Stuart Jackson, the firm’s grassweed expert.

“The best control from post-emergence treatments is achieved by treating actively growing blackgrass at the one- to two-leaf stage. With warm soils and temperatures still relatively high, both grass weeds and winter wheat will quickly go through these growth stages, so it is important to be prepared.”
