Harvest 09: Catchy in Scotland

Spring barley harvest is Scotland in about 5-10% through, and quality is excellent so far, says Highland Grain’s Simon Barry.

“It’s very good so far – there are absolutely no problems with it. However, we’ve had some pretty broken weather and are just catching it when we can.”

Crops were now getting ripe, so farmers could do with a decent spell of dry weather, he said. “It’s drizzling today – we’re champing at the bit and ready to go. It’s just frustrating.”

Winter barley and oilseed rape harvest was all but finished, and wheat crops varied from almost fit to two or even three weeks away.

“In general, winter barely has been better than normal, with yields at about 3t/acre (7.4t/ha) and good quality.”

Oilseed rape yields had also been good, at 3.7-4.3t/ha (1.5-1.75t/acre), although oils had not been particularly high, at 43-45%.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
