Chris Padfield is combining wheat today at The Hawthorns, Staunton, Gloucestershire, despite a short shower this morning.
The Battalion second wheat was yielding about 8.2t/ha (3.3t/acre) so far, and he had 49ha (120 acres) left to finish off.
Flash oilseed rape yielded exceptionally well, with one 20ha (50 acre) block averaging 4.4-5t/ha (1.8-2t/acre) at 10.5% moisture.
“It was a minor miracle, considering it was drilled on 22 September,” he said.
Flash and Castille across the whole 100ha (250 acres) averaged a pleasing 4.2-4.4t/ha (1.7-1.8t/acre), despite a couple of fields which came in at just 2.5t/ha (1t/acre).
Farmers were about halfway through harvest in the area, and Mr Padfield hoped to finish sometime next week.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
