Harvest 09: Driers running 24/7

Paul Bird was combining rapeseed today at Flashbrook Grange, Newport, Shropshire, having finished his winter barley.

“It’s plenty wet enough, but what do you do,” he said. The 8ha (20 acres) of Castille cut so far at 12% moisture was yielding well at 4.3t/ha (1.7t/acre).

The 28ha (70 acres) of Saffron winter barley, cut at 19% moisture, disappointed at 6.7t/ha (2.7t/acre), after flooding over the winter.

“The drier has been going 24 hours a day,” said Mr Bird. “The barley was brackled over so we cut a lot of the heads off. It’s almost a salvage job and we’ve hardly even started.”

He had 113ha (280 acres) of rape to cut, after which would come the oats.

Farmers had not cut much in the area, although weather conditions had been very localised, with hail and heavy rain knocking rape crops just three miles down the road, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
