Harvest 09: Finished in Worcs

Andrew Symonds has finished harvest at Lincoms Farm, Hartlebury, Worcestershire, but there is still quite a lot of wheat to cut in the area.

“We hadn’t had to dry much – we missed a lot of the heavy showers as it’s been so localised,” he said.

His Tipple spring barley had averaged a pleasing 7t/ha (2.8t/acre) at 1.5% nitrogen and 13% moisture.

The Pearl winter barley was a bit disappointing, with a similar yield, but also made malting at 1.7% nitrogen and 12-13% moisture.

Gladiator winter wheat averaged 9t/ha (3.6t/acre), with Einstein yielding 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre), both at 14.5-15% moisture.

With more barley than wheat, Mr Symonds had been able to cut the wheat when dry, leaving the barley to combine later.

“But there’s quite a bit of wheat still to do in the area – they’re struggling to get it under 16% or 17% moisture.”
