Harvest 09: Finished near Shrewsbury

Harvest has gone relatively smoothly at Alistair Home-Roberts’s Berwick Grove Farm, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

“It has been a bit stop-start and niggly, but has run a lot better than last year.”

Having taken on an extra 400ha (1000 acres) he was a bit concerned about progress, but a larger combine coped well between the showers.

“Yields have been all over the place – drilling date was more to blame than anything, as the later wheat didn’t do as well as it could have done.”

The Humber, Oakley, Claire and Consort ranged from 8.6-11.1t/ha (3.5-4.5t/acre), averaging slightly over the five-year mean, at 9.1t/ha (3.7t/acre).

Tipple spring barley averaged 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), the same as the Saffron and Carat winter barley.

“It seemed to take forever to the last 100 acres (40ha), but we finished on Monday (7 September,” says Mr Home-Roberts.

“We had to dry pretty much everything, but it’s only been a percent here and there.”

Most people had almost finished in the area, with just 10% of harvest left to do, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
