Harvest 09: Finished OSR in Lincs

John Lucas hoped to get into his winter wheat at Welbourne Farms, Lincoln, today (11 August), having been being rained off after cutting a headland yesterday.

“It is still over 20% moisture, but I’m hoping to get on later today.” So far the Oakley had yielded reasonably well, although it wasn’t really ripe yet.

But 19ha (47 acres) of Cordiale second wheat was ready to go, and had a nice bold sample, he said.

Mr Lucas had also cut some Tipple spring barley, at just under 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), and finished his oilseed rape about a week ago.

“There’s still some rape to finish in the area, and hardly anybody has started wheat.”

The oilseed rape had exceeded all expectations, having been drilled late due to the difficult autumn. “It’s amazing where it came from.”

The 25ha (62 acres) of Excalibur had done the best, at 4.75t/ha (1.9t/acre), with the Cabernet averaging 4.5t/ha (1.8t/acre) and Splendour 4.2t/ha (1.7t/acre).
