Harvest 09: Plenty to do in Shrops

Harvest is still only two-thirds finished at Rob Bebbington’s Fieldfare Farms, Whitchurch, Shropshire.

“It’s been completely frustrating – we’ve been moving the combine round and round just to find something that’s dry. We’ve been rained off seven times in eight fields.”

He had measured almost 6” of rain in July, and only 1” in August, spread in showers every couple of days, followed by 2” since the start of September.

“We have cut 200 acres (80ha) in the past 18 days, and we’ve probably dried 90% of what we’ve cut this year.”

Wheat had averaged 21% moisture so far, and Mr Bebbington still had 140ha (350 acres) of Claire, Alchemy and Humber to combine, as well as 80ha (200 acres) of winter and spring beans.

“Surprisingly, the quality is still there – there are very few chitted grains.”

The wheat cut so far had ranged from 8.6t/ha to over 9.9t/ha (3.5-4t/acre), while the Tipple spring barley had averaged 5.9t/ha (2.4t/acre)

Saffron and Boost winter barley had averaged a pleasing 8.3t/ha (3.35t/acre), while oilseed rape had yielded 3.8t/ha (1.54t/acre).

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
