Harvest 09: SB disappoints in Norfolk

Robin Baines is busy combining spring barley and triticale at Tunstead, Norwich, Norfolk, and expects to make a start on winter wheat early next week.

Although the triticale was yielding better than average, the Tipple and Quench spring barley was disappointing, averaging just 5.2t/ha (2.1t/acre).

However, it had all made malting quality, as had the winter barley, which yielded about average, said Mr Baines.

The 400ha (1000 acres) of Pearl and Maris Otter averaged 6.4t/ha (2.6t/acre), much as expected.

Harvest was about 40% complete in the area, and was ahead of last year, he added.

“Some people have left their spring barley to cut their wheat. I’ll start my wheat early next week, and I’ve got some spring barley which is still a week off.”
