Harvest 09: Starting spring barley in Moray

Frank Thomson is combining spring barley today at Burnside of Tynet, Clochan, Buckie, Morayshire.

“It’s a very nice day for a change – we’ve just had showers and showers.”

So far the Optic was doing well, at 1.3% nitrogen and 5% screenings. “I’m happy with that.”

Mr Thomson still had 28ha (70 acres) of oilseed rape to cut – about half of the total rapeseed area.

“It was so late in last autumn – normally we like to get the rape out of the way before the spring barley, but the barley is ripe now.”

The Grace rapeseed had yielded well so far, at 4.1t/ha (1.67t/acre).

Volume winter barley had also performed well, averaging 9.3-9.9t/ha (3.75-4t/acre).

Winter barley harvest was almost finished in the area, with rape about 70% through and spring barley just starting, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
