Harvest 09: Waiting to start at Walgrove Farm

Andrew Goodman hoped to make a start on his spring barley at Walgrove Farm, near Worcester, tomorrow (13 August).

With no winter barley or oilseed rape he was yet to combine anything, and was keen for a decent spell of weather to help bring harvest along.

“The crops are not spoiling yet – and the wheat isn’t ready.”

Mr Goodman had 49ha (120 acres) of Waggon spring barley to cut, followed by 49ha (120 acres) of winter wheat, 10ha (25 acres) of spring wheat, and 53ha (130 acres) of spring beans.

“There is some second wheat done in the area – and they’re just making a start on spring barley at the moment.

“All of the oilseed rape and winter barley is pretty much finished. We just want a week’s sunshine now.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
