Harvest 09: Wheat quality good

Milling wheat quality is excellent so far, although proteins are extremely variable, according to Camgrain manager Philip Darke.

“Group 1 wheats are looking good, and mycotoxin levels are low.” As of Tuesday (4 August) the store had received about 40,000t of wheat, and proteins varied from 10.5% to 16.6%.

On average, Group 1 proteins were 13.1%, bushelweights were strong, and Hagbergs were over 300, he said.

Farmers were rushing to get their milling wheat in the barn, at about 19% moisture – and despite some green straw the wheat was turning fast.

Some producers were also making a start on spring barley, and quality appeared to be good so far.

“We’re a bit late but everybody has gone bonkers over the past couple of days.”

Winter barley was just about finished in the area, with oilseed rape 85% through.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
