Harvest Highlights: How farmers can get involved
Do you want the latest information on how harvest is progressing – and from farmers rather than through the eyes of the trade?
Farmers Weekly is once again running its Harvest Highlights service.
To bring you the best information we will need your help. The more information you can feed through to FW the better our coverage will be. Here’s how:
Phone and email
Contact FW’s harvest correspondent Olivia Cooper by calling her on 01392 877 356 or by emailing olivia.cooper@btinternet.com
Text
We’ve set up a special text number so you can send quick updates by phone. Send a short text to 07537 402 287 which starts with the word fwharvest and then includes your name, location, what you are cutting and how it is coming off. Each text message will be charged at your standard message rate.
This is a service which enables you to send short messages through the internet or from a phone. You’ll first need to set up a Twitter account, but this only takes a minute. Once registered you can post a message from the web about how things are going and if you include the word #fwharvest we can pick this up automatically. You can also set up your account so you can send messages via your mobile phone.
Interactive map
There is a harvest progress map on the website which asks for an email address, an assessment for how far through harvest you are and your county. The idea is to produce the UK’s first farmer-generated map of how harvest is progressing by region. Readers will be able to update their figures as often as they like. You can also text your position. Eg text 07537 402 287 with message “joe.bloggs@something.com, 40% done, Essex”
Photos
You can upload your harvest photos (there are instructions when you get there) or email them to fwipictures@rbi.co.uk. Please include some information about when and where the picture was taken, variety, yield etc.
Video
Upload your harvest videos to YouTube, tag them with the word #fwharvest and we will search for them and display them on FWi. You could also email a link to fwipictures@rbi.co.uk.
