As many fields of wheat remain uncut across the UK, growers are concerned about signs of sprouting in some crops, according to latest reports.

Wet weather is forecast for a number of areas across the UK over the bank holiday weekend, reinforcing fears for quality.

Remaining Robigus was causing concern for Chris Hewis in Lincolnshire, where the crops were beginning to sprout in the ear. “We’ve cut very little in the last two weeks due to intermittent rain.”

Robigus cut so far had yielded “exceptionally well” at 10t/ha, and he said standing Einstein was still looking well without any sign of sprouting.

Kent farmer Robert Shove said many people in the area still had wheat to cut. “One wheat farmer said his crops had all fallen over and were growing in the ear.”

He cut the last 30ha (75ac) of Claire at over 15% moisture to get the crop in, but thought quality should still be ok.

Harvest had been stop-start for Shropshire grower Andrew Craig. “We’re going steady again now. With 52ha of wheat left we might get finished after the weekend.”

He hoped to get in the remaining wheat soon because the straw was looking very ripe.

“We’ve heard reports from around here and in Staffordshire of wheat starting to sprout. Hopefully we’ll be ok if we can get it done in a couple of days.”

But, Warwickshire farmer Roger Mann was pleased he had managed to get all his crops in before the rain in a very easy harvest.

“All the crops came in dry. We expect quality to be good as it was cut before the rain and so it kept its colour. We went through so easily in August.”
