Harvest is now two-thirds of the way through, after farmers managed to cut 18% of the total cereals area in the week to 19 August.
According to the latest HGCA / ADAS harvest report, 50-60% of wheat crops requiring drying in the South and up to 100% of crops needed drying in the North.
In the South and East of England, wheat harvest was 70-90% complete by 19 August, with 30-60% cut in the Midlands and Northern England, and a start now made in the North East and Scotland.
Overall, 55% of the wheat had now been cut, and yields continued to be well above average at 8.2-8.5t/ha, said the report.
“There have been occasional poor yields, caused mainly by blackgrass, disease, poor soil structure and exposed sites on light land.”
Quality remained good, although protein levels on milling wheat were still low at an average of 11.9%.
“Recent heavy rain showers do not appear to have negatively affected quality, with specific weights and Hagberg Falling Numbers remaining high.”

Spring barley harvest was 40% through, and yields were above average at 5.9-6.1t/ha, added the report.
“Yields have been better than average on both heavy and light land, with water availability through grain fill sufficient to minimise stress on light land, but not so much as to cause significant waterlogging on heavier land.”
Specific weights were good, at 65kg/hl, while nitrogen contents were averaging 1.3%.
Oat quality was also good, with specific weights averaging 52kg/hl. With 60% of the oat crop now in the barn, harvest progress was well ahead, and yields were above average at 5.8-6.1t/ha.
Winter barley and oilseed rape harvest was now virtually complete, with yields averaging 7.2-7.4t/ha and 3.4-3.6t/ha, respectively.
“A few fields of spring rape have been harvested in the Eastern region, with early yields ranging from 2-2.6t/ha,” said the report.
“In most other regions spring rape harvest has not yet started, although desiccation is underway in South East and the West Midlands.”
