Harvest rolls on in Somerset

Jeremy Walker was pleased to have almost finished harvest at Haddon Farm, Bridgwater, Somerset, and was busy combining other peoples’ wheat today (August 23).

“Our wheat yields have been nothing special – we would normally expect between 8.6t/ha and 9.3t/ha (3.5-3.75t/acre) but the Gladiator and Alchemy averaged 7.4-8t/ha (3-3.25t/acre),” said Mr Walker.

“Bushelweights have also been generally disappointing – our wheat made 73-74kg/hl but others have come in below 71kg/hl.”

Saffron winter barley, yielded well at over 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) and 65-66kg/hl but Carat fell just short of that mark after going over in the rain.

The rape was “pretty average” at 3t/ha (1.25t/acre), leaving just some spring beans to get in once they ripened, said Mr Walker.
