Higher prices make up for lower wheat yields

Ben Atkinson hoped to finish harvest at Grange Farm, Rippingdale, Lincolnshire, on Friday or Saturday this week (w/e August 30). “Most people around here have finished already.”

He still had 202ha (500 acres) of wheat and 32ha (80 acres) of beans to cut, and said wheat yields were about 12% below average. “But the price more than compensates for that.”

The 1093ha (2700 acres) of Welford, Humber and Richmond winter wheat had yielded about 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), with the heavier land performing better than the lighter soils.

“We’re about 40% of our way through drilling winter rape, which is two to three days behind normal – but conditions are alright.”

  • Crop: Winter wheat
