John finishes winter wheat in Armagh

John Best finished cutting winter wheat this morning (24 September) at Acton House Farm, Poyntzpass, County Armagh.

“It was worth persevering,” he said. Yields were good at 9.1t/ha (3.7t/acre) despite quite a bit of sprouting and shedding, particularly in the Robigus.

“There’s a lot of wheat in the area – it will take a good week to clear it up,” said Mr Best. He reckoned there was still about 30% of wheat and spring barley to finish.

He was about to make a start on his 8ha (20 acres) of Belvoir spring wheat, which was not looking good.

After that he had 12ha (30 acres) of beans to do, which would be ready in about a week. 

Mr Best started drilling his oilseed rape yesterday. “If we get a good autumn it will get away flying.”
