John Beslee has finished oilseed rape at Hook Green Farm, Southfleet, Kent, and says his wheat is not too far off.
“It just wanted three or four warm days – but I don’t think we’re going to get them.”
The 32ha (80 acres) of Splendor had yielded between 3.2t/ha and 4.7t/ha (1.3-1.9t/acre), averaging about 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre).
Having finished the rapeseed last week, Mr Beslee made a start on some wheat at 18% moisture, but found the straw too green to thrash properly.
He did see someone combining wheat near Thanet yesterday (26 July), but rain meant nobody was likely to cutting much today.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
