Little quality left in late harvest

His 120ha (300 acre) crop consisting of Option, Einstein and Malacca “looked black and horrible in the ear,” but the crop yielded well at 11.1 t/ha (4.5 t/acre).

“I think the extra yields will compensate for the poor quality.”

His Option looked the best with Hagbergs around 140 and high proteins. It made the milling grade but because of slightly low hagbergs he will only receive a discounted premium.

“The Hagberg levels were tired, but they weren‘t completely shot.”

Mr Fuller-Shapcott has finished drilling his oilseed rape and when he has the time he will make a start on his winter barley.

“In the last two weeks we‘ve been running around like headless chickens because we‘ve been so busy.”
