Winter barley quality in the South East is excellent so far, with malting barley coming into store at 100% germination, according to Weald Granary.
Transport manager Kenton Beasley said the store was only receiving “dribs and drabs” at the moment, with combines dodging localised showers.
But the weather was fine today and marketing director Andy Barr was combining near Lenham, Kent.
“Generally speaking, the early view is that the yields are quite good – we had one farmer near Redhill who was very pleased with yields over 7.4t/ha (3t/acre),” said Mr Beasley.
The Met Office was forecasting further unsettled weather this week, with sunshine and showers likely to keep combine drivers on their toes.
Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
