Monster sugar beet alert
Mine’s bigger than yours! Eastern Crop Watch agronomist Brian Ross of Frontier found this monster sugar beet while out field walking this week.
The top growth, he says, has grown to at least two and a half feet off the ground, while the leaves dwarf the biggest leaves of the other beet in the crop of Mars.
“Unfortunately I don’t think the root size is commensurate with the leaf size, although if it was I’m not sure the harvester would cope. Still it would be interesting to see the size of the root when the field is harvested.”
Just why this beet has grown to such an enormous size isn’t obvious, he says. “Maybe it is genetic throw-back – I just don’t know.”
So why has this beet grown so large? Send your caption to fwarable@rbi.co.uk. FWi will pay £50 for the best one.
