New additions to pulse recommended lists

FIVE NEW pea varieties and one winter bean have been provisionally added to the NIAB/PGRO* Pulse Recommended Lists for 2005/06, it has been announced.

The new pea varieties include two whites (Rocket and Goblin), one large blue (Woody), one small blue (Hawaii) and one maple (Rose).

This year the “small blue” category has been added to reflect potential market outlets, commented the PGRO’s Anthony Biddle. The provisionally recommended newcomers offer a range of improvements other than yield, he said.

For example, Rocket and Goblin offer better downy mildew resistance than the other listed white pea types and Rocket is joint-highest yielder alongside Bilbo.

Woody also has good downy mildew resistance and is rated above Cooper, added PGRO’s Steve Belcher. While its yield is slightly below Cooper, it is above Venture and Nitouche, he said.

In addition, Kahuna is now fully recommended and is the highest yielding human consumption marrowfat variety, he said.

In the winter bean list, Griffin has received provisional recommendation, almost matching Wizard for yield and has similar ascochyta resistance.
