New cereals disease guide launched

Identifying cereal diseases is not as easy as some people may think.

“We tend to assume that because agronomists are BASIS-qualified they know the lot,” said Broom’s Barn director Bill Clark.

“But I’ve been surprised at how many of them have been unable to tell what some of the diseases we’re showing on the posters here are.”

Rosie Bryson for BASF, sponsor of the HGCA‘s Encyclopaedia of Cereal Diseases, said that with nothing similar having been published for quite some while the exercise was well worthwhile.

The HGCA’s research director Graham Jellis said that although an encyclopaedia was available online, having it in booklet form was more practical.

With clear pictures it covered both common and rare infections and their importance, and described their symptoms and life cycles.
