OK harvest nearly there – harvest update
“All in all, the situation‘s not too bad here. Others are much worse off,” he told FWi Harvest Highlights.
Mr Morris said he had received around 100mm of rain over the past month, with 50mm since Sunday evening (Aug 22).
“We‘ve had to do a huge amount of drying. We cut hardly anything above 20% as a matter of policy, however we might have to re-look at that if the weather doesn‘t improve.”
He has 50ha of wheat left to cut, from an original 260ha, comprising of Claire, Napier and Excess. Yields were described as “average” at 3.25-3.5t/acre.
The heavier land performed much better than the areas of brash, which suffered from the dry start last autumn, he notes.
Much of Mr Morris‘ wheat has been affected by orange blossom midge and he says that all will be going into the feed market this year.
Weather permitting, he hopes he will be able to resume combining on Sunday.
