Oilseed rape is performing better than expected at Ben Atkinson’s Grange Farm, Rippingdale, Lincolnshire.
“We started combining on Monday (20 July), got rained off on Tuesday, got going again yesterday afternoon and are full steam ahead today,” he said.
The 80ha (200 acres) of Castille had yielded just over 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre) so far, but Mr Atkinson still had 730ha (1800 acres) of rape to do. “We’re just grabbing it while we can, at about 11% moisture so far.”
The wheat was ripening remarkably quickly, he added. “I don’t think there’s going to be much of a gap between wheat and rape this year.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
