Perfection sought in Scottish borders
He’s finished his 8 ha (20 acre) Haka crop with yields slightly below 7.41 t/ha (3 t/acre).
“It’s a little disappointing but it looked a bit dodgy all year.”
However he was more impressed with the 12 ha (30 acres) of Pearl which yielded slightly above 7.41 t/ha (3 t/acre) and had a 1.51% nitrogen content.
Moisture contents have ranged between 15.2 – 17.8%.
“It wasn’t too bad but we can still do better – I’m only happy if we achieve perfection.”
Mr Fuller-Shopcott still has another 20 ha (50 acres) of Pearl still to harvest.
His farm lies on heavy to very heavy land.
“In some places the soil is red where it’s just completely clay.”
“It was good this year as it helped with the establishment of the rape crop, but last year it went just rock solid.
“We could have broken it up and sold bricks. We would have made a fortune.”
Mr Fuller-Shopcott will spray off his Elan and Caracas oilseed rape crop later today, but will harvest his Cocktail spring barley before the rape.
