Pleasing barley at Wallingford

Ed Allen is very pleased with harvest progress at DC & RJ Allen & Partners, Wallingford, Oxfordshire, having finished winter barley and oilseed rape.

“We started cutting wheat on Sunday (27 July) – and if it’s as good as the winter barley then I’ll be very happy,” he said.

So far the Claire and Gallant wheat had yielded around 10t/ha – but some barley varieties had topped even that, said Mr Allen.

“Volume was the stand-out crop. It’s the first time we’ve grown it and it did 10.3t/ha after cleaning and drying.

“Glacier was the second best, at 9.6t/ha, with Sequel at 9.1t/ha. I think we’ll drop Cassia next year, as that only managed 8.2t/ha.”

Oilseed rape was a mixed bag, with Expower topping at 4t/ha, PR46W21 doing 3.6t/ha and Harper and Excalibur 3.4t/ha.
