Pleasing yields at Lower Norton
Tom Coleman has finished harvest at Lower Norton Farm, Winchester, Hampshire, and is pleased with above average yields.
“It was quite a battle with the weather, but we finished cutting at about 15% moisture, and we’ve got our oilseed rape drilled, so we’re feeling quite chuffed.”
Wheat yields were above the five-year average for the farm, with Panorama averaging 9.6t/ha (3.9t/acre), and Oakley and Viscount 10.4-10.9t/ha (4.2-4.4t/acre).
Spring barley was very variable, depending on soil type, with Tipple and Quench ranging from 6.2t/ha to 7.4t/ha (2.5-3t/acre). “It all made the malting spec.”
Castille oilseed rape, however, was disappointing, at 3.7-4t/ha (1.5-1.6t/acre), but Cabernet did better, at 4.2t/ha (1.7t/acre), with Vision at 4.7t/ha (1.9t/acre).
“Most people have finished around here now – and given the growing season, we’re thrilled with those yields.”
