Potato supplier gains carbon standard

Branston, the UK’s leading supplier of potatoes, has become the first food producer in the country to receive the Carbon Trust Standard.

The firm, which supplies more than 400,000t of fresh potatoes every year, was given the award for reducing its carbon emissions by 6% over the past three years.

Branston is one of just 26 UK organisations certified by the Carbon Trust Standard Company.

A new state-of-the-art cold store, high-speed doors to reduce heat loss and upgraded water treatment have all helped it to cut emissions.

The Carbon Trust Standard was introduced in June 2008 in response to businesses and consumers demanding an environmental certification scheme that recognised a continuing reduction in emissions.

Branston, which has a turnover of more than £100m and employs over 500 people at three sites, will be audited every two years to ensure it has met its targets.

“Becoming the first food producer in the country to hold the Carbon Trust Standard is a great honour,” said Graeme Beattie, managing director. “The whole team at Branston has worked incredibly hard to secure it.”
