Preparations for Canterbury Harvest

Brian Mummery expected to start harvest on contract farms later today (July 18) and on his own farm by the end of the week in Canterbury.

His crops on Great Pett Farm were “not looking too bad”, although he had a couple of flat fields of Pearl winter barley that suffered from the weather in June. He hoped the Pearl would meet malting spec, although he was concerned for quality in the fields where the crop was flat.

Harvest was ahead of last year, he said. “We’ve never started before 22 – 23 July, so we’ll be ahead of usual this year.”

Mr Mummery said only “bits and pieces” had been cut in the area, and no farms had properly started because the crops had generally not ripened evenly.
