Rain reminds Andrew of last year’s harvest

Two inches of rain last night (28 July) brought an unwelcome taste of last year’s weather to Andrew Goodman of Walgrove Farm, Worcester.

“It was getting on for last year’s proportions – it’s washed the streams away and everything,” he said. “I haven’t checked the spring barley yet to see if it’s gone flat.”

With no winter barley or oilseed rape, Mr Goodman had not yet started harvest, and said his wheat was at least 10 days away. “It’s looking quite good.”

He had 73ha (180 acres) of Alchemy and Ambrosia winter wheat, as well as 20ha (50 acres) of Waggon spring barley and 40ha (100 acres) of Fuego spring beans to do.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
