Farmers Weekly Farmer Focus writer John Jeffrey on the Scottish borders said he had been very fortunate this year with the early barley harvest.
Sixty hectares of Sequel winter barley yielded 8.75t/ha, and he was pleased with the bushel weight of 64kg/hl because the crop “didn’t look very good”. He was also pleased with the large amount of straw as it was worth a lot in the area.
Harvest for him was better than last year, with the most important focus on keeping the crop dry.
Mr Jeffrey said: “If farmers in the area didn’t harvest last week (w/e July 24) then they’ll be struggling now as it’s very wet.”
He suggested there was a mixed harvest in the area, with early barley taken well and plenty of straw everywhere. He said malting barley in the area had good nitrogen levels but there are occasional screening troubles.
