Scottish wheat yields mixed

Charlie Stewart near St Boswells, Kelso, has finished 800ha of Robigus and Malacca winter wheat with mixed yields.

First wheat Robigus cut at 9.4 – 10.5t/ha, and second wheat Robigus yielded 8.5t/ha. Specific weights were fine at 75kg/hl, he said.

Malacca averaged 8.5t/ha with poorer yields on some fields. Hagbergs were excellent, but specific weights were slightly due to lack of rainfall. Protein is below 13%, he noted.

Mr Stewart said the crop was wetter than he would have liked in light of high fuel prices, but felt he should get it in before the forecast rain.

Yields are slightly down on last year and prices are not as good, so he is waiting for an upturn before selling. “They’re as low as they can go, so we may as well wait to see if they go up.”
