Sea fog hampers wheat harvest

Wheat harvest is not as dry as hoped for Michael Taylor in Folkestone, Kent. Mist and sea fog at night has meant moisture is 17 – 20% during the day.

Yields are about normal with 140ha of Claire and Solstice at 10t/ha. He was pleased with the bushel weight of 80kg/hl which he said was due to the sunshine. Yields are slightly better than last year which was a below average year.

Oilseed rape has also been average at 4t/ha. He said there are usually good and bad fields, but this year it was all about the same. He cut 90ha of Expert and Caracas, and expects to grow Expert with Castille and Excalibur next season.
