Slow going for Norfolk barley

Rain had again prevented Norfolk farmer Ed Lankfer from combining anything today and he had been able to cut just 19ha of his Carat winter barley in the past week.

Yields on the sandy loam soils came in at 5.5t/ha, he noted. “We’re just getting depressed, we want to get on, but it’s a nightmare, we’ve got to buy our time, and hopefully a better spell of weather will come.”

Mr Lankfer had a total 240ha (600 acres) including Carat winter barley, Catalina oilseed rape, winter wheat and winter oats.

The farm had a good mix of soils, from black Fens to sandy loams through to chalks and even to “blue” clays.
