Spring barley underway in Wiltshire

Harvest was going steadily at Galteemore Farm, Beckhampton, according to David Hues.

He had just begun 73ha (180 acres) of Westminster spring barley and it was going well. He hoped to finish the barley today and said the crop looked good.

Mr Hues was pleased to have finished 364ha (900 acres) of Castille oilseed rape on Tuesday (31 July), which he had cut at moisture contents between 7%-27%. “The sample looked good,” he said.

He hoped to begin 20ha (50 acres) of Gerald winter oats tomorrow and said they looked ok and were standing very well.

He also hoped to begin 405ha (1000 acres) of Alchemy winter wheat this weekend, which looked a little battered. “It’s nearly there, it’s turning very quickly.”

Mr Hues said overall harvest progress was fine; “It’s been frustrating up until now, but now the weather’s good it’s not a problem and the forecast looks promising over the weekend. It’s going to be an average harvest, but we’ve been fortunate where we are.”
