Stuart finally finishes rape in Borders

Stuart Fuller-Shapcott finally finished his oilseed rape last week (w/e 12 September) at Sweethope, Kelso, but was yet to make a start on his spring barley or winter wheat.

The oilseed rape varied from 3-4.5t/ha (1.2-1.8t/acre), with the later cut crops shedding badly.

Pearl winter barley averaged 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) and all made malting, said Mr Fuller-Shapcott.

He now had about 162ha (400 acres) of Oxbridge and Optic spring barley and Einstein, Zebedee and Solstice winter wheat to cut.

“Everything, touch wood, is still standing,” he said. “The guiding factor will be where I can travel. I would never get up some of the steep fields at the moment.”

With dreadful ground conditions Mr Fuller-Shapcott planned to chop most of his straw to avoid further damage to the fields through baling.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
